Soo weten wy oock wel, dat het niet mogelijck en is, alles door regulen van buyten te leeren, en datmen derhalven het leven in velen diende te gebruycken: maer alsoo het veelmalen gebeurt datmen het leven op die tijt als ’t ons van nooden is, net en kan bekomen, so behoordemen neerstigh te wesen om in sijnen opgaenden tijt alle dingen te modellen, {Hoemen moet soeken veel dingen te modellen.} [….] [ndr: Goeree lists different subjects of which one can create models.] Voornamentlijck moetmen sijn kans waernemen ontrent de vremdigheden,{En welcke voornamentlijck.} […] en somtijts evenwel hebben moet om in sijn Inventien toe te passen; daerom datmen die in verscheyde opsichten en verkiesingen moet sien te bekomen. [suggested translation, Marije Osnabrugge:] As such we also recognize that it is not possible to learn everything exhaustively by means of the rules, and that one should therefore make use of the life in many cases: but as it frequently happens that one cannot obtain the life at that moment when it is needed, one should be diligent to make models of all things in the course of time, {How one should attempt to model many things.} […] One should especially grab his chances with regard to the exotic things, {And which specifically.} […] and sometimes are also needed to apply to his Inventions; therefore one should obtain these in different views and situations. Take good care to apply these Masterly and not in a Childish way.

Voor alle dingen moet oock een Meesterlijck Schilder wil hy eenen goeden naem behouden, seer na-denckende en omsichtigh in al sijn doen wesen, insonderheyt ontrent sijn Inventien, en by-een ordineeringe der Historyen, op dat hy niet alleen geen onmogelijcke of Konst-strijdige dingen voort en brenge; {Een Schilder moet omsichtig ende nadenkdende wesen.} maer dat hy doch in geenen deele dingen maeckt, van welcke, of de Luyden diese toehooren, of andere diese beschouwen sullen, eenen quaden uytlegh daer van doen komen, of oock buyten de Intenty vanden Schilder, oorsaeck van beschimpingh verleenen. Hierom is ‘et datmen sich altijdt wel vanden sin en waerheydt van sijn voornemen moet verseeckeren, datse op een goede meeninge, en in reden bestaende uytlegh gegrontvest is.

[suggested translation, Marije Osnabrugge:] Above all a Masterly Painter should also, if he wants to keep his good name, be very thoughtful and careful in all his behavior, especially with regard to his Inventions and the way he brings together the composition of his Histories, so that he would not only avoid to bring forth impossible things or those that go against Art; {A painter has to be careful and thoughtful.} but that in no case he would make things, about which the people to whom they belong or others who see them, would get a bad explanation from them, or also give cause for taunting outside the Intention of the Painter. Therefore one should always ascertain himself well of the meaning and truth of his plan, that it is based on a good opinion and an explanation consisting of reason.

Staet oock noch wel aen te mercken, dat dit alles niet verstaen en wort van allerhande mannieren van Teyckenen, want het rouw en Schetsachtigh Teyckenen, meest in trecken en omtrecken bestaet, al-hoe-wel de lossigheydt en ongeachtheydt daer in oock een seer groot voordeel geven kan, wanneerse gheleerdelijck en wel op sijne plaets is toe-gepast.

[suggested translation, Marije Osnabrugge:] As soon as one understands the meaning of this Example well, one will accustom oneself to observe it and (after a certain period) be able to apply with knowledge the aforementioned looseness to his Drawing; in order for you to acquire a pleasant manner and Masterly handling through it. It is to be remarked, that all of this is not applicable to all manners of Drawing, as the rough and sketch-like Drawing, exists mainly of lines and contours, although the looseness and carelessness can also provide great advantage there, when it is applied wisely and at the right place.
