T: Wel Jongman, hoe gaat het, hebt gy al een begin gemaakt van de Perspektief?
S: Ja toch, noch drie a vier lessen dan ben ik ‘er deur, ik kan reeds myn Planum slaan, Oogpunt en Distantie vinden, alle dingen over end zetten, en haar verkorting mede: wel te verstaan, voor zo ver de onlichaamelijke voorwerpen betreft, zonder Schaaduwe.
T: Het is in alle dingen zo. Eerst de fondamenten, daar na volgt de Elevatie, of verheevenheid, en eindelyk de lichaamen met haar schaaduw en slagschaaduwe, welke de Perspektief-Praktyk genoemt word.

S [ndr: painter]; Yes certainly, another three or four lessons and I will be through with it, I can already make my planum [ndr: surface], view point and find the distance, place all things upward as well as their foreshortening: to be clear, for as far as the non-bodily objects are concerned, without shadow. T: It is the same for all things. Frist the foundations, then the elevation follows and finally the bodies with their shadow and cast shadow, which is called the practical perspective.
Here, as in the Groot Shcilderboek, De lairesse makes a subtle distinction between the knowledge and the execution of perspective. [MO]

In de zaak zelve is aan te merken de eigenschap van een Plafonds, en waar in die met een Schildery aan de wand is verschillende. Voor eerst, in de verkortinge der voorwerpen; en ten tweden, in de koleur [...]Daar en boven dient men te weeten, wat een Konstenaar met de Optica kan uitwerken. Door middel van de zelve, of Perspectief practyk, kan men regt doen schynen dat scheef of rond is, plat en effen dat hol en rond is, ja zo het uiterlyk schynt vertoonen dat 'er niet en is; gelyk de beroemde Pater Niceron, en meer anderen klaarlyk aangeweezen hebben: waarom men zich niet behoeft te verwonderen, dat 'er zo weinige Schilders in dit deel van de Konst uitmunten, vermits de Perspectief zelden door hen zo veel verstaan word om de practyk vast te konnen hebben; daar nochtans zonder de zelve onmogelyk een goed Plafonds of Zolderstuk kan werden gemaakt.
[D'après DE LAIRESSE 1738, p. 450:] In the Matter itself we ought to consider, the Nature of a Plafond, or Cieling-painting, and wherein it differs from a Wall-painting ; as first, in the Foreshortening of the Objects, and secondly, in the Colour […]We ought moreover to know, that by means of Optics, or practical Perspective, we can make crooked Things look strait, hollow or rising ones, flat and even, and cause them outwardly to appear what they really are not ; as the famous F. Niceron, and others, have plainly demonstrated. Wherefore, we need not wonder, that so few Painters excel in this Branch of the Art, since they are little conversant with the practical Part of Perspective, tho’ without it ‘tis impossible to execute a good Cieling piece.
