[Suggested translation, Marije Osnabrugge:] It is then true that the uneducated Art-lover, when running into some good pieces, with the help of his natural insight and the simple routine of his eyes, will easily and with a unspeakable pleasure understand and discern the excellence of the Art of the artisan, a bit from its manner of drawing, from its colours, from its highlights and depths, from its composition and other similar things, but this is all he can do, because it is impossible for him to better fathom the other hidden things of Art; seen that it is only the work of those who are truly learned, to strike a rightful judgement of the whole situation of the Invention, deliberating whether all the figures are placed in the appropriate place and whether the true live of such passions, stirrings and movements have been poured into it through an Artful interpretation, that coincides with the situation of the depicted Historical or virtuous subject.
